Client: Brisbane State High School | Location: South Brisbane

Brisbane State High School (BSHS), a renowned co-educational state secondary school located in South Brisbane, sought modern and functional upgrades to their administration and teaching facilities. Over a series of building and refurbishment projects, CMBM upgraded BSHS’s facilities and helped the school continue to provide a leading educational space for students and teachers.

Read on to find out how we did it.

Scope of works

CMBM were engaged to complete several construction projects over a 12-month period at Brisbane State High School, including innovative new office configurations, a storage facility, HVAC upgrades, and a building extension.

Project Outcomes

CMBM delivered functional and contemporary building upgrades for the client, providing the school’s students and administration staff with modern spaces to learn and work in. All projects were delivered during the school holidays to avoid interference with school operations.

Core Works

PAC Storage Facility

CMBM constructed a storage room in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) to provide a dedicated space to store equipment. Located on the second floor of the building, additional precautions were required to ensure construction was carried out safely and to schedule.

Works involved:

  • Constructing steel frames and installing Villaboard linings
  • Installing double timber doors
  • Skirting to internal area
  • Interior painting
  • Installing raven ramp to doorway

The result was a durable and complementary addition to the Performing Arts Centre that provided much needed storage space for the PAC team.

H Block Upgrades & HVAC Installation

CMBM upgraded the lobby area and installed a HVAC system to Brisbane State High School’s heritage-listed H Block. Prior to installing the new split system air conditioning unit, conduits were installed throughout the building.

As one of the oldest school buildings in Queensland, the project required careful planning and construction in order to adhere to heritage-listing requirements.

Works involved:

  • Electrical works to install new LED lighting
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC works
  • Bracing to open plan ceilings over 5 metres
  • Commercial painting to the building exterior
  • Installation of carpet tiles

D Block Extension

CMBM facilitated the extension of D Block by constructing three new offices along the back wall of the building, and demolishing the wall between the classroom and existing office to extend the learning space. A final builders’ clean was carried out to prepare for the handover of the new space.
This project was completed within two weeks to ensure there was no construction during the school term.

Works included:

  • Demolition and removal of existing wall
  • Construction of new offices, including plaster works
  • Installation of skirting boards, glazed partitioning, and safety glass
  • Ceiling, floor, and carpet repairs
  • Commercial painting
  • Builders’ clean

B Block Reconfiguration

CMBM managed the reconfiguration of B Block during the September school holidays, creating a new open plan area by moving the server room to a newly constructed space and opening up the existing server room right up to the corridor.

Works included:

  • Demolition and disposal of two walls
  • Construction of new server room
  • Electrical works to facilitate safe demolitions and relocate switches
  • Carpet installation and floor repairs
  • Commercial painting of new walls, ceiling, skirting, and doors

CMBM provided modern and functional upgrades to create better educational outcomes for Brisbane State High School. With the addition of new storage spaces and refurbishments of existing facilities, BSHS can now execute their syllabus and administrative duties more freely, effectively, and comfortably.
